If you need a power wheelchair, the first thing to cross your mind might well be how to pay for it. Fortunately, if you are over 65, your chair can qualify for coverage as durable medical equipment under your Medicare Part B coverage. Your doctor will have to prescribe the chair and verify that you need it for treatment of an illness or injury. Your doctor must also verify that:
- You would be bed-bound or chair-bound if you didn’t have the power chair
- You are unable to use a manual wheelchair, and a power wheelchair is medically necessary
- You can safely operate a power chair
You will be responsible for 20 percent of the cost and will need to meet your Part B deductible.
Your doctor or physical therapist may recommend that your power wheelchair be modified if your condition warrants. For example, if you are very tall or obese, your wheelchair may need adjustments. Likewise, if you are an amputee, you may need special cushioning.
Some power wheelchair accessories are also covered under Medicare Part B, provided that your doctor verifies that they are medically necessary. Some options and accessories are not covered, and you will have to pay for them yourself. Among options and accessories that aren’t covered:
- Wheelchair ramps
- Any device used to transport your chair
- A cup holder
- A bag or pouch for carrying items
In addition to your doctor and physical therapist, the vendor you use to buy your power wheelchair can be extremely helpful in choosing the chair that meets your exact specifications. Whether the various options and accessories you consider are covered by insurance or not, you’ll want to pick the ones that meet your needs. Among them:
- A basket
- Extra batteries
- Upgraded wheels
- Various fabrics for the cushions
- A lift for the car that transports your wheelchair
