If you’ve recently suffered an injury or illness that resulted in significant mobility issues, you’re probably looking into your options for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation, or rehab, centers offer a variety of services under one roof. From occupational therapy to family counseling, a rehab center is designed to help clients work through all aspects of their disability.
You may find that you have several options for rehabilitation in your area. That’s good news — but it’s important to do a thorough investigation of each one to ensure that you get the best treatment possible. Consider what each center has to offer and select the one that is ideally suited to your needs for ongoing treatment.
Not sure where to begin? Start by finding the answers to these questions:
Where is it?
A convenient location is important, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of your medical care. Know which rehab centers are close by, and which ones specialize in the conditions that you’re facing.
Is it accredited?
Some rehab centers are accredited — others are not. Individuals with spinal cord injuries in particular should consider finding a center that is accredited through the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission, or CARF. These centers meet CARF’s rigorous standards for quality care and service.
Is the staff experienced?
Ideally, the rehab center you choose should have a staff that has extensive experience with your particular disability. Ask how many patients they serve with similar mobility issues.
Is the treatment holistic?
Physical therapy is terrific — but what if you need occupational therapy? Or psychiatric care? Or have a family member who needs support and education? Make sure your rehab center offers a full range of services to meet all of your needs — both physical and emotional.
